Parking Meter Rates and Hour Changes in our Hood
Tuesday, 28 October 2008 05:48
FROM CITY OF LA, PARKING BUREAU

I wanted to update you on our progress in implementing the new parking meter rates and hours in Council District 4.  I apologize for not being able to get this information to you further in advance.

On Monday we changed the rates in the first two parking lots in the Miracle Mile area; the on-street meters will follow by Monday with expanded hours to 8 PM where the meters currently run to 6.  The new rates in Hollywood (partially CD 4) should be fully implemented by today.  The hours there won't change until next month.

Attached please find the full CD 4 schedules for meter rates and hours changes for both on-street and in the lots.  The dates are subject to change, but should be pretty close.  I have also included a map of the CD 4 Parking Meter Zones (PMZs) for your reference.

I would appreciate your help in communicating this information to your Neighborhood Councils and business associations, so that they have notice of our progress and plans.  Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks,

LAPD Needs Volunteers - Can You Help?
Friday, 11 April 2008 20:14

I just received a call from the LAPD. They wanted to explain why we no longer get the e-policing notices (those are the automated notices of all crimes in our area via email). Apparently, it's a big chore that is done manually. The detective said she could really use some help once a week otherwise we probably won't have any more epolicing.

If you have time to volunteer for the LAPD please call Detective Charlotte Burns 213-922-8212.

Miracle Mile Action Committee Successes!
Tuesday, 08 April 2008 05:39

The Miracle Mile Action Committee has been a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization since the early 1990's. We were instrumental in effecting change in the zoning regulations to help stop the destruction of rent-controlled and architecturally significant buildings through changes that required guest parking and less density. This zoning change took ten years.

PARKING
  • The MMAC also lobbied for permit district 78 for the renters as well as the creation of one-way streets to allow for more parking.
  • We took back a section of Formosa (between 3rd and 2nd street on the East side of the street near Daniel Murphy High School). Now part of that street is public overnight parking instead of PPD 41.
  • Busby's has generously given us parking behind their building on Sunday-Wednesday night.
  • Various people are working on getting more parking, attending hearings to stop overdevelopment and neighborhood destruction, attending hearings to support rent control, repainting of curbs (both red and white depending on the needs of the community) and much more.
  • The El Rey has hired a member of the Miracle Mile Chamber of Commerce (Bill Bergstrom) to negotiate more parking for the neighbors - both donated and paid lots (preferably to allow overnight parking).
CRIME & SAFETY

Since 2007 over 100 people have joined MMAC. We now have a Miracle Mile Safety Patrol that creates a presence in the neighborhood (and a greater sense of community for the neighbors). We need more members, but so far we have started patrolling with 3-6 members at a time in the area from La Brea to Hauser and Wilshire to Third. We wear bright yellow jackets and black hats with our logo, and we communicate using cell phones. We hope to provide an escort home to those who park far from their homes. Right now we patrol most Friday and Saturday nights and are patrolling from 10pm-midnight and from midnight to 2am. This patrol was based on the model created by Barbara Gallen in the 1990's. Barbara did a wonderful job training members in self defense and working with the LAPD.

  • The LAPD also now patrols our neighborhood more regularly using car and bike patrols.
  • Our City Councilmember Tom LaBonge donated money (as well as some of our members) to enable us to buy jackets.
  • Busby's Nightclub and the El Rey have donated flyers, flashlights and their venue to help us with our patrol and community issues such as parking.
Please join us and help us continue to see more and more victories and community empowerment.
